Cargreen Yacht Club
The best little yacht club on the Tamar

We are one of the friendliest sailing clubs on the River Tamar on the Cornwall side, with thriving cadet and dinghy sections with deepwater swinging moorings and some shallow mooring which are available just two miles upstream from the Tamar bridges and five miles from Plymouth.

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our former Commodore Ray Moxley. He loved the Club and his cheerful and friendly presence will be missed by all.

He and Ann have been stalwart members for more than nearly 30 years. During his very successful tenure as Commodore from 2002 to 2004, he designed the Club’s extension forming the showers, changing rooms and the modification to the staircase, all of which have worked so well and for which we are extremely grateful. He gave considerable help to the Club over very many years and hardly missed any of the club activities except when he and Ann were sailing their beloved “Dandelion”. Not so long ago he gave us a fascinating talk about the revolutionary twin masted catamaran that he designed and had built, and subsequently sailed very successfully in the Round the Island race of 2013. At 90 Ray was the oldest man in the race.

He was a very successful architect in London and was senior partner of Moxley, Jenner and Partners, who designed many landmark buildings including Chelsea Harbour, in which they had a flat, and the Excel building which now houses the London Boat Show.

He and Ann have owned March Cottage in Cargreen for many years and when they retired they bought the old post office next door and, did some major work, and moved down to the village full time.

The funeral will be on 15th November at 14.30 in Landulph Church, and afterwards at Cargreen Yacht Club for “Tea”. Advance notice of numbers coming would be appreciated to help the catering. Please e-mail em.honey@btinternet.com.

If you wish, donations in his memory can be made to Oxfam, which would be particularly appropriate as his Father was its founder.

Message from our Commodore

Welcome to the website of the CYC.

I hope you find all you need to know about our club whether you’re a long standing member or a prospective newcomer. Thanks to our excellent webmaster, Nick Fox, I think this is one of the best, most complete and most up to date small boating club sites you will find. If, however, it does not provide you with want you want, please let Nick or me know so we can put it right. Our contact details can be found under the Member Info tag.

My aims for the club this year are to concentrate mainly on the cruising and social programmes. Last year’s concerns for the Cadets have largely evaporated thanks to a dedicated team of parents and assistants. There is now a waiting list for new Cadet members and a full and exciting programme has been prepared.

Tony Head has devised a full and varied cruising programme and I hope members will give him full support. A cruise in company with fellow club members can be a very enjoyable experience and are of particular value to new and/or nervous cruisers who can take heart from more experienced members. Have a look on the Cruising tag for the full programme which will be published very shortly.

Elsewhere on the site you will find the Social programme which includes a couple of new events as well as old favourites. Do come along and give Chris your support.

I wish you fair winds and good sailing.

James Jermain, Commodore
